NBFC vs Bank

NBFC vs Bank Business Loan — When to Use Which (and the True Cost Difference)

Banks offer lower rates but stricter policy. NBFCs are faster and more flexible but cost 4–8% more. Here's how to choose.

Banks and NBFCs both lend to MSMEs, but they operate under different rules. Banks are regulated by RBI with strict underwriting norms; NBFCs have more flexibility on policy but price higher for the additional risk they take. Going NBFC when you could qualify for a bank loan is expensive; going bank when you don't qualify wastes 4–6 weeks.

The fundamental difference

Banks (PSU + private)

Lower cost of funds → lower lending rates. Stricter underwriting (CIBIL cut-offs, FOIR caps, sector restrictions). Slower TAT.

NBFCs

Higher cost of funds → higher lending rates. Flexible underwriting. Faster TAT. Willing to lend where banks won't.

Rate spread

Same borrower: NBFC rate typically 3–8% higher than bank rate. The spread is the cost of flexibility.

TAT difference

Bank: 3–6 weeks. NBFC: 1–2 weeks. Fintech NBFC: 3–7 days. Speed matters when working capital is urgent.

When to choose a bank vs an NBFC

  • CIBIL 720+, clean banking, ITR profit strong → bank (lower rate)
  • CIBIL 650–720, banking adequate, ITR weak → NBFC (more flexible)
  • CIBIL below 650 → NBFC or fintech (banks won't approve)
  • Need disbursement in 1 week → NBFC/fintech (banks are slower)
  • Ticket >₹50 L → bank (NBFC ticket caps lower for unsecured)
  • Sector restricted by banks (e.g., real estate, certain services) → NBFC
  • Vintage <3 years → NBFC (banks usually want 3+)
  • Clean strong file → always try bank first; save NBFC for second attempt

FAQ

Common questions

Will applying to an NBFC hurt my CIBIL the same as applying to a bank?+

Yes — every lender-initiated enquiry, whether bank or NBFC, is a hard enquiry on CIBIL. Multiple enquiries across both in a short window compound the damage. Don't 'test the market' by applying to 5 lenders simultaneously. Diagnose your file, identify the 1–2 lenders most likely to approve, and apply only there.

Are NBFCs safer or riskier than banks?+

For the borrower, the safety is similar — both are RBI-regulated. The difference is mostly in pricing and flexibility. NBFCs may have less consumer-friendly processes (collections, restructuring) than banks. The bigger risk for the borrower is the higher interest rate, not the lender failing.

Can I move from an NBFC loan to a bank loan later?+

Yes — this is called 'takeover' or 'balance transfer'. If your file has improved (CIBIL up, banking clean, ITR stronger) since the NBFC loan, a bank may takeover the outstanding at a lower rate. The savings must justify the takeover cost (processing fee + documentation). Worth considering after 12–18 months of on-time repayment.
